The Emergence Of The Image According to the Antique writer Pliny the Elder, the first portrait ever made was of an absent lover. Dibutade, a Corinthian maid, outlined her departing lover's shadow on a wall. Then Butade, her father, filled the outline with clay and fired it along with some pots. With the emergence of the image she felt less alone.
